Tips & Teasers

Blocked your phone?

  • If you enter the wrong PIN code three times, it will block your phone for you. If this happens you will need to enter your eight-digit PUK code (the unblocking code). If you kept the sheet of paper that came attached to your SIM card originally, it is shown at the bottom of this. If not, never fear - just ring your mobile network's customer care (with a pen handy) and they will give you your PUK code. Enter it into your phone, and you will be asked for a new four-digit code, which you will be asked to re-enter a second time to confirm it. This can be your existing 4-digit PIN code, or you can choose another one you might find easier to remember. Either way, once you enter it you will now be able to use your phone as normal

Want to Remove your Caller ID

  • To remove caller Line ID for one call only, press #31# and then dial the number as normal. Your number won't be displayed on your caller’s phone. The next call you make will again show your caller details (unless of course you enter the code again!)

Extending Ring Tone Duration

  • To extend your ring tone, dial the following code: ** 61*0865yournumber ** 30 #
  • You can extend your ring tone for 5, 10, 20 and 30 seconds. The last number in the code above dictates ring time. In the example above, 30 was used as an example.

To check Balance of your Bill –

  • Simply dial *101# – and you call chargers since your last bill will be displayed on your phone.

IMEI Number

  • The IMEI number is the serial number unique to your phone. You will find it on the label inside your phone (it's the long one that looks a bit like a credit card number with extra /s), but to avoid taking your phone apart, simply key in the following code and it will be displayed on the screen: *#06#
  • This information can be especially useful if you need to find out if your phone is in warranty before you send in for repair - a phone warranty only lasts 12 months from the date of purchase.

Can't send text messages?

  • If you find that you can't send text messages, check you have the correct message centre number stored in your phone. For O2 customers it should be +353868002000

Concatenated Text Messages

  • This is the fancy term for sending a text message that is longer than 160 characters. Although you don't see it, your phone breaks each text message into segments of 160 characters and sends each one separately. So if you have typed 354 characters in your message, it will be sent through the network as three separate messages - 160 + 160 + 34. Mobile phones are now clever enough to recognise and re-assemble concatenated text messages, and your recipient will usually just get one long text message on their phone.
  • Be warned - you get charged for each text message that is sent through the network, not how many you actually type!! So in the above example you would be charged for three messages, even though you typed just one!

Lost & Stolen Phones

  • Temporary Barring: If you find that your mobile phone has been lost or stolen, contact your network immediately and ask them to put a temporary barr on your number. This will ensure that all out-going calls are suspended temporarily. If you find your phone, you can just ring the network again and ask them to lift the barr, and you can make calls again. If you are unlucky enough to have your phone stolen, at least you can be sure that you are not paying for someone else’s calls!

  • Blocking Phones: If your mobile goes AWOL, did you know that O2 can block all stolen O2 mobiles by putting a block on the IMEI number (the phone's serial number). Unlike a temporary barr that can be put on a phone number straight away, an IMEI barr takes 24 hours. Contact your account manager or O2 customer care on 1909 for more information.
